COUPLES WORK
My work with couples follows the style and teachings of Pia Mellody and Terry Real, I have also been greatly influenced by the work of Patrick Carnes, John Gottman, Matthew McKay, and Patricia Evans.
Couples who have been “stuck” in dysfunctional patterns of interaction learn how to utilize functional boundaries with each other, speaking to be known and listening out of curiosity vs. defensiveness. Communication focuses around the simple but necessary elements of respect and accountability, thereby deepening the couples’ intimacy.
Intensive therapy sessions are offered for couples looking to improve or save their relationship. Most sessions require a two-hour period every two to three weeks. Homework is assigned to strengthen and improve the couples’ skills. Homework may also include utilizing other resources as appropriate such as: reading books or listening to tapes/CDs, seeing a psychopharmacologist, attending related 12-step meetings or attending specific workshops which may further growth and healing.
I also offer half day and full day sessions for couples that are out of town. Full day sessions can be scheduled during Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm with a one hour lunch break from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, a 10 minute break in the morning and another 10 minute break in the afternoon. Half day sessions are from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm with a 10 minute break in between.
